Cardo Maximus

The 'cardo maximus' was the principal north–south street of a Roman city, and you can see the evocative remains of Beirut's cardo maximus between the city's major religious buildings, showing that this area has been the city centre for a long time. There's little interpretation available, but you can make out the course of the road and the foundations of what were probably shops alongside.
