German Military Underground Hospital

Construction work on this huge tunnel complex, covering some 7000 sq metres, began in 1944, when the D-Day landings heralded German defeat and potentially a large amount of casualties in battle. The tunnels were hewn out of solid rock by Eastern European slave labourers, and though the tunnels were never completed, they remain as a compelling memorial to those who lived and died building them.
