The National Cherry Blossom Festival which is in full bloom in Washington DC right now, dates back to 1912when the city was gifted 3000 cherry trees by Tokyo to mark the twinning of the two cities.
Today the festival takes place over four weekends in spring, with over one and a half million visitors arriving in the capital to see the trees in all their glory.
