I'm a Dublin-based writer and digital editor for Lonely Planet, where I've been part of the team since 2018. Growing up in a family scattered around the world sparked a lifelong love of travel. There was always someone to visit somewhere. While my travels have taken me across Latin America, Australia and Europe, it's always the anticipation of the next adventure that excites me the most. My approach to travel is all about experiencing a place as locals do, delving into its culture through its m…

Copenhagen has become even easier to explore thanks to a new metro line that improves access to some of the city's coolest neighbourhoods.

Visitors may know Copenhagen for touristed spots like Nyhavn and Indre By because they're smack bang in the middle of the city centre. But those looking to spread their wings away from the top-five postcard views now have an easier and speedier way to get to the heart of the city. A new, cohesive, circular metro line will bring them around the outskirts of the inner city within a 24-minute span.

The M3 City Circle Line, as it's known in English (or M3 Cityringen in Danish), dramatically reduces the time it takes for travellers to reach some of the city's best spots, from the buzzy "bros" of Nørrebro, Østerbro and Vesterbro to the amusement rides of Tivoli Gardens, as well as leafy Frederiksberg Have and Geranium - the only three-Michelin-star restaurant in Denmark.

The driverless, metro line launched in September and is the result of the largest construction project in the city since the 1600s. It supports the Copenhagen’s ambitions of becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral capital by 2025 and brings 85% of the population within 600 metres of a metro station.

Of course, Copenhagen has always been an easy city to navigate. Its 24-hour public transport network is incredibly efficient and it's one of the most bike-friendly capitals in the world. But sometimes biking in a new and unfamiliar place can be daunting. The new City Circle metro line makes things that little bit more user-friendly for everyone. Travellers can hop on the train at the Kongens Nytorv station downtown and ride the line in either direction. In addition, the metro network will be extended to the waterside suburbs of Nordhavn and Sydhavn in the coming years.

If you need some tips on the best places to explore on the new line, check out our guide to Copenhagen's neighbourhoods and go from there.
