Centered on the ruins of the crumbling Spanish colonial fortress of Fuerte San Lorenzo, the 120-sq-km San Lorenzo Protected Area includes the former US military base of Fort Sherman, as well as 12 different ecosystems including mangroves, marshlands, semi-deciduous forests and humid rainforest. It's a prime location for birdwatching, with some 436 species recorded.
